The church was built on orders from Pope Paul V in 1605. It was inaugurated by Pope Gregory V in 1623. Odoardo cardinal Farnese was also present at the inauguration. The church was granted to the Confraternity of Carmel.
It was completed more than a century later, in 1750.
In 1772, it was damaged by a fire. Pope Clement XIV had it restored.
The church is served by diocesan clergy.
The facade by Michelangelo Specchi was completed in 1750. It's in the Late Baroque style, and has two stories. On the lower level, there are pilasters with Corinthian capitals. Above the door is a curved tympanon with a fresco of Our Lady. Between the levels is a dedicatory inscription: B. MARIA VIRIGINI DE MONTE CARMELO. On the upper level is a window with a curved tympanon, and at the top a triangular tympanon.
